Sacramental Preparation for Children
First Reconciliation (Sacrament of Penance), First Eucharist, and Confirmation are “family affairs” at St. Paul and require parental involvement. Formation sessions are held for parents when their children are preparing to receive any of these sacraments, and other activities outside of the classroom for parents and children together will be scheduled. We view these times as an opportunity for the whole family to grow together in faith!

Sacramental preparation for First Eucharist                               First Reconciliation and Confirmation is a two-year consecutive requirement. Children preparing for First Eucharist and First Reconciliation are expected to be enrolled in St. Paul School or the after-school Religious Education Program by first grade. They usually receive First Reconciliation in the Fall, and First Eucharist in the Spring of the second grade year. Preparation for Confirmation begins in seventh grade, and those children are normally confirmed at the end of eighth grade. (Enrollment in another religious education program or Catholic school prior to coming to St. Paul would most likely fulfill this requirement.) If a child has “missed” receiving a sacrament at the usual time, special preparation can often be arranged.

Sacramental Preparation for Adults - RCIA
Various situations exist where an adult may need sacramental preparation:
• an adult who has been baptized as a Catholic but has not received
First Eucharist and/or the Sacrament of Confirmation;
• an adult who has been validly baptized in another Christian
denomination but wishes to become a Catholic;
• an adult who has never been baptized and wishes to become a Catholic.

In the case of the baptized Catholic, this individual needs to complete his or her “initiation” into the Church and be prepared for the other two sacraments of Initiation: Eucharist and Confirmation or, if the person has already received First Eucharist, just Confirmation.

In the case of the baptized non-Catholic or someone who has never been baptized at all, these adults may need more extensive preparation.

RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and is a wonderful process whereby someone can either complete their initiation into the Church; or learn more about Catholicism and determine if they would like to prepare to become a Catholic. This process involves discernment, instruction, experience of Catholic worship and prayer, and involvement with the community and varies according to individual needs.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW)
Children in grades 1-5 have the opportunity to participate in the Liturgy of the Word at their level during the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses during the school year. No registration is required for this. Children are called forward after the opening prayer at Mass and return to the main assembly before the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Adult Faith Formation
There are many opportunities for adult faith formation at St. Paul. Activities and schedules vary and updated information can usually be found in The Reporter, on the parish website: stpaulonthelake.org, or by calling the Religious Education Office. Look for information about adult catechism sessions, Bible study, special speakers, retreats, missions and other events.

Lay Theological Academy (LTA)
The Lay Theological Academy is a consortium of Christian churches in the Grosse Pointe area who collaborate to present programs that would be of interest to adult Christians of any denomination. The LTA publishes Fall and Winter course brochures and announcements about upcoming events can be found in the Sunday Reporter.

Parish Religious Library
A wonderful selection of books, videos and audio cassettes is available for borrowing from our parish library located in the St. Paul School building on the second floor across from the Religious Education Office.
